Many in the back of the room, not hard of hearing, were pleased to read the captions, while noshing on tasty treats. Photo shows it all (Captioning Pro was Patti White, Good Sport Captioning). – See more at: http://ccacaptioning.org/captions-capture-the-votes/#sthash.m652MQSQ.dpuf

Have We Said Happy New Year Yet?

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL READING! HAVE YOU JOINED THE CCAC YET? WE HOPE SO, YOU ARE NEEDED AND WE VALUE EACH VOICE IN THE CCAC MEMBERS’ FORUM.

Here’s a blogpost we read today that is timely – and we are happy to share the link:

http://cdrnys.org/blog/advocacy/the-2016-state-of-the-union-address-no-access-for-the-deaf/

A CCAC member told us all about that post today (thanks Jamie S!) and the topic is so timely. As some of you know, CCAC was VERY active in a media captioning campaign at the end of 2015 and continuing this year –  #WHccNow campaign. It was partially successful in fact (thanks Braam!) but not ALL media on Twitter or FB from the USA White House is accessible yet. Some of it is. They also have told us they are working on solutions, and that’s good to know from the top.

WE THE PEOPLE…

Now about that BIG event, the SOTU address by the President the other evening. (State of the Union). There was a lot of good-sounding hype about how it was to be ACCESSIBLE for everyone. The reality proved to be different, as the good blogpost explains. Several CCAC folks were saying the same thing.

We expect the White House to “catch up” and hopefully edit any video showing this SOTU address – any video anyplace – on social media and on the WH website, and on YouTube and on anything the WH used to broadcast. Catching up is good, yet not good enough. We need and deserve – full equal communication access. That means on time, the first time, at the same time any media is published, broadcast, uploaded for anyone. It’s a good goal.

LEADERSHIP from the top is vital for this. We the people. Yes, it’s very complicated they say to have quality captioning on so many different platforms, devices, etc. Yet you know what? We think they are smart enough to do this now. We have great confidence in the power of group advocacy, and also in the good intentions of many in government.

Moving forward – let’s make 2016 be a rock star year for INCLUSION OF QUALITY CAPTIONING UNIVERSALLY – the CCAC Mission. Join us, we need you too.
