BENEFITS – JOYS! – OF CAPTION INCLUSION

June 20, 2016 Comments Off on BENEFITS – JOYS! – OF CAPTION INCLUSION

TIME TO REMIND YOU -AND PASS THIS ALONG

Sing it! All media and live events benefit from quality captioning. Most of below apply to both live captioning for any event, meeting, consultation, conference, webinar, etc. and to all sorts of media (video, DVD, cinema, gaming, television, radio).

CCAC list of benefits since 2012 grows and grows! Use it, add your own and tell us:

1. Learning to read—with text, in the classroom, on television, and online. Literacy gets a boost with captions on.

2. Learning a new language with captions on.

3. Translation for other audiences in other languages possible with quality captioning.

4. Immediate written transcript—with no need for a note-taker or flawless memory.

5.  Employed or working in other situations where there are different accents, poor acoustics, or mumbling visitors—we’re told it boosts productivity.

6. Managing good lives with different learning and listening styles— autism, tinnitus, auditory perceptual differences and people with other disabilities

7. In business and want to reach wider markets—for search engine optimization, captioning is a vital ingredient to maximize readership and do business online.

The “power of captioning” is a compelling concept.

8. Used by so many in noisy areas (sports bars, crowded public places like airports, etc.).

9  Used by many in quiet areas! (library viewing, at home too).

10 And – of course – to create access for people with hearing loss, who are deafened, or deaf, and also for many deaf-blind who still can use captions.

See also this older blogpost:https://ccacblog.wordpress.com/2013/11/20/captions-not-only-for-deaf-hear-us-roar/ and be sure to send us additions to this great list.

Another partial list from Australia, formatted clearly and visually attractive, see http://www.capthat.com.au/benefits-captionshttp://www.capthat.com.au/benefits-captions and note the references included. CCAC is interested in any data connected to these benefits. There’s some research in Hawaii and India, and also substantial good narrative data (see CCAC articles and research on the CCAC website).

As captioning inclusion grows, there are still gigantic gaps all over the place. That’s why the CCAC exists – and your voice and membership is needed.

CCACAPTIONING.ORG invites you.

CCAC activities to help with also:
Advocacy projects as above, or a new one you want to do. If there is an area of everyday life where captioning is lacking, why not put yourself forward to lead or participate in a small team which can co-ordinate advocacy activities?

Writers and contributors: If you like writing, you can submit articles about captioning to us for publication or we can help you submit them to external publications to raise awareness and increase provision of captioning

Film-makers: If you have camera equipment and editing skills, you could make a short film or slideshow about your experience of captioning that CCAC can promote via social media and our websites.

Administration and book-keeping: We need volunteers to help us keep track of new members, donations, sponsors, and more essential tasks for the organization.
Web developers and digital marketing experts: We need help to design new web pages and digital promotional materials

Social media leaders: A lot of our work takes place over social media and we need people to monitor and stimulate activity on our various channels

Grants leader: CCAC gives grants for live event captioning to stimulate provision. We are seeking a volunteer who can help deliver outreach activities to support this alongside a fabulous small team in place now

Hearing loss and related Groups Collaborations and Liasons: We need volunteers to continue and develop new working relationships between CCAC and other organizations that support people with hearing loss, deafness, disabilities, education, media, etc.

Fundraising: CCAC is a non-profit organization that needs to raise funds in order to grow its activities. We would be very keen to hear from people with fundraising skills who may be able to assist us in this

Marketing the CCAC and the CCAC Mission – all tasks above are part of this, yet here, someone to use an identified open source system to keep track of it all and more. Yes you can!

AIR TRAVEL ACCESS CONTINUES! HEAR THIS AMERICAN AIRLINES

June 9, 2016 Comments Off on AIR TRAVEL ACCESS CONTINUES! HEAR THIS AMERICAN AIRLINES

CCAC Logo with words Caption Universally

We pay the same to fly any airline as any “hearing” person. We enjoy In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) the same as any hearing person IF THERE IS ACCESS WITH QUALITY CAPTIONING FOR US ALL.

CCAC advocates for Air Travel Access for several years. It’s a slow process. Currently, the Department of Transportation (USA) is discussing many aspects of this need – IFE and also, we hope and have encouraged them – discussing live text for airport announcements.

There are many ways we advocate, e.g. from CCAC leadership to government directly, to their consultants, to our representatives, on social media and other online communications. We join others in their personal and individual advocacy too, as well as other groups. If we have not talked yet, get in touch. Strength in numbers and in good collaborations.

This week a captioning advocate asked CCAC to join his campaign to American Airlines which we are happy to hear about and participate in – collaborate with.  On his flight this week between NY and Austin, American Air had no films with CC.

He and we continue seeking solutions from American Airlines ASAP. We invite you to contact them on Twitter or any other way you prefer. @AmericanAirlines

Coincidentally today (June 9) a family member of mine flew from Seattle to NY on American. No captions at all.

Read more on the CCAC website here: http://ccacaptioning.org/captioning-transportation/

Captioning is not only for millions of people with hearing loss and deafness who travel, but also for so many others who deserve equal communication access! Examples include non-English speakers and good people with many differences who use captioning too.

We also hope you JOIN the actual CCAC official non-profit very soon! We are all volunteers and our membership needs you too. Join from the website, CCACaptioning.org – CCAC is the Place 2 B 4 Captioning Advocacy
